Children begin to understand speech from six months – scientists

At six months, babies already memorize individual words.

“Come on, what does he understand there,” the adults wave their hand, conducting non-childish conversations with babies. And in vain.

“Children aged 6-9 months most often do not yet speak, do not point to objects, do not walk,” says Erica Bergelson, a scientist at the University of Pennsylvania. – But in fact, they are already collecting a picture of the world in their heads, linking objects with the words that denote them.

Previously, psychologists were convinced that six-month-old babies were able to understand only individual sounds, but not whole words. However, the results of the study by Erica Bergelson have shaken this confidence. It turned out that children aged six months and older already remember and understand many words. So adults should not be surprised when their child, at the age of three or four, suddenly gives out something not quite decent. And the kindergarten is also not always worth sinning. Better to remember your own sins.

By the way, there is also a positive point in this. Psychologist Daniel Swingley of the University of Pennsylvania is convinced that the more parents talk to their children, the faster the babies start talking. And they learn much faster.

– Children cannot give you a witty answer, but they understand and remember a lot. And the more they know, the stronger the foundation for their future knowledge is built, says Swingley.
